James O'Donnell was born to Anthony, Oughtmeen, and Mary (nee Sweeney), Drumlaghdrid, in 1909. Mary (nee O'Donnell), was born in 1914 to Jimmy O'Donnell, Craghey, and Annie O'Donnell, Craugheyboyle. They were married in the Chapel of Dungloe on 30th January 1933.

James and Mary lived and raised their children Jimmy, Denis, Anthony, Maureen and Hughie in Craghey.

Mary's mother, Annie (nee O'Donnell), lived with the family. Annie was born in Craugheyboyle in 1881 to parents Hugh and Mary (nee Rogers).

Annie married Jimmy O'Donnell on 12 March 1912 in Acres, Co. Donegal. They raised their children in Craghey; Denis, Mary and Hughie.

​Jimmy died on 15 Aug 1927 in Craghey.
